PL Series: Planetary Lapping Machines for PCD, CVD The PL4 and larger PL5 lapping machines are designed to put a mirror finish on PCD and CVD mother discs. The lapping is done dry and heat generated in removed by chilled water. The standard PL4 machine has 4 motorized, variable speed, gimbaled, water cooled holders for the discs which are held on "arms" against a variable speed planetary motion lapping wheel driven by a 8.95kW spindle. The 300mm diameter wheel is 45mm wide and suitable for PCD discs up to 75mm in diameter. Lapping times are controlled via timers A 5th arm can be fitted as an optional extra. The larger PL5 machine can polish discs up to 100mm diameter.         THE STRENGTHS - PL4/PL5 Well proven design – over 100 machines in operation with major PCD manufacturers around the world Complex planetary motion combined with self leveling, motor driven disc holders ensure the wheel and discs are polished flat and remain flat Chilled water removes heat generated and the uniform temperature ensures discs do not thermally bend. Smaller pieces can be lapped with suitable carrier plates. Polishing times for PCD discs depend on the flatness of the starting discs but are typically 1-2 hours.
