Coborn offer a PCD laser cutting service using their LD2 laser dicing machine based in the UK. 

Outsourcing your cutting requirements is especially beneficial if you:

  • Have large volumes of cutting to do but are not yet ready to buy your own laser
  • Need to cut holes in PCD; this is difficult and time consuming if a wire machine is used
  • Have surges in production and need additional, temporary capacity
  • Wish to evaluate laser cutting as an alternative to wire cutting

THE STRENGTHS
  • Laser cutting gives a 100 micron kerf compared to 350 microns with wire cutting; this increases yield by 10-15% if small pieces are cut.

  • Cutting times are measured in minutes not hours.

  • Cutting speed on 1.6mm PCD is 80-100mm/min.

  • The pieces stay interlocked in place until they are needed.

  • Experimental tools can be made quickly and easily.

  • The laser can cut holes just as fast as cutting shapes.

  • Partial or complete cutting of PCD blanks is possible.

  • A mixed pattern of shapes can be cut from a disc.

  • The laser head can be tilted to give angle cutting if required.

  • Cut pieces can be separated and cleaned or returned ‘interlocked/as cut’.
